This presentation will overview fundamental terminology and principles for investigating the emergence, development, and coordination of local whole community physical activity systems for children. Communities are defined as a population of people in a group considered collectively as a social system. Community structure is defined as a “wellness landscape” or system of observable social and physical settings of daily life, where a local population of people interact in learning, working, playing, and receiving services. For children, daily life is dominated by local adult-led organized group settings, including school classrooms, after school program groups, youth club groups, and youth sport teams. Preliminary results from Wellscapes, an NCI-funded Type 3–Hybrid Implementation-Effectiveness rural community randomized trial (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03380143), will be reported to illustrate the comparison of two different processes for local community development of child physical activity systems.
As always, there will be a moderated Q&A session following Dr. Dzewaltowski’s presentation. You can send us your questions in advance or enter them in the Q&A box during the presentation.
